So, Reader, have you ever wondered how to botch a podcast?
Well, I'll tell ya how.
It's really quite simple...
✅ Invest in a great mic.
✅ Do your makeup and hair.
And then… let your 7-month-old puppy lose his mind barking in the room next door 🤦
Yep. That was me a couple of weeks ago.
My mini Yorkie, Chili, decided to make his big debut right in the middle of recording a podcast about... get this...LinkedIn engagement.
Chili, my podcast sabotager!
(Pretty sure he thought he was “engaging,” too.)
I felt so awful at the end when the podcast host said, "I'm not so sure we'll be able to use this. Your dog's high-pitched barking makes it sound like there are issues with the mics."
Talk about complete mortification!
I hate wasting anyone's time.
And I remember profusely apologizing (and then sending her a coffee gift card afterwards).
But I wasn't just embarrassed because of the barking. (Hello, fancy mics that pick up everything!)
The thing is, I really wanted to show up well for the host.
We had such a good conversation, and I didn’t want to mess it up for her audience.
So, in case the episode never goes live (which is highly possible 🙃), I figured I’d do what any other content creator would do...
I captured my thoughts immediately after, so I could share my key takeaways here.
This is what we talked about... 👇
It's not about numbers, it's about going deeper with connections.
Forget the follower count for a sec.
I know we can get enamored by vanity metrics like followers. (I'm guilty at times, too.)
BUT...most of my clients just want to find other great people to work with.
And most of the time, what I see is that the handful of people already liking or commenting on their posts are being overlooked.
That's right.
Those who are already engaging and are potential leads are getting ignored because many are stuck thinking they need to find "new" people to connect with.
When, in reality, there's an existing network you already have that you just need to explore more deeply.
Ask youself...
Do you actually know the majority of those already connected with you? I mean...really know them?
Are you having 1-on-1 conversations in the DMs and Zoom/Google Meets with these folks?
Even if they’re not dream clients at first glance, many times these are the people who could be your future collaborators or the ones who refer you to other leads.
Don't overlook the people already paying attention to you.
Great engagement looks like different layers every day.
Not everyone you speak with on LinkedIn is at the stage of trusting you.
Some of those connections may be new, having started commenting on their posts just recently.
Others you may have been introduced to or met at an in-person event, and you're talking more in the DMs.
This means you will be the one bouncing between different engagement activities.
And you have to keep the energy moving across those layers.
#2. Copying & pasting a post from my Google doc and publishing.
#3. Hopping over to my DMs and continuing those conversations.
#4. Going back to my post to answer the comments.
#5. And making sure I'm connecting with anyone new who has made the effort to comment on my posts.
Continuously focusing on these different layers of engagement (commenting, post responses, connection requests, DMs) builds momentum.
I think of it as making small intentional actions that will compound over time. Be prepared to bounce between all of these activities every day.
Be choosy. You get to start conversations with people who genuinely interest you.
LinkedIn has a billion+ people on the platform!
So without a doubt...you're people are here...you've just got to find them:)
That's the good news, right?
And everyone is always giving off clues from what's in their profile to how they're commenting, if it's someone you want to engage with further.
So if you see something that sparks your interest...respond to that. (And it doesn't have to be business related...it could be because they love white chocolate macadamia nut cookies! 🤤)
When you lead with genuine interest, the conversation comes so much easier.
And one of the amazing benefits of building your business is that you can be choosy if you wish.
So yeah… maybe I botched a podcast.
But I was also reminded that showing up (even when it’s messy or has barking involved) matters more than being perfect.
And when your gut tells you to just go get the dog....get the dog and put it in your lap for that podcast:) The host will probably thank you 😁
