What do I post on LinkedIn to get engagement? (The shockingly simple fix to this problem.)

Hey, Reader,

By far, one of the biggest questions I get from clients is, "What do I post?"

Have you been there?

I know I have.

And although it's a little easier these days, thanks to a few years of actively creating on the platform, here are some things I do to develop some effective LinkedIn post ideas that start conversations.

I'm skipping the small talk, and getting right to it...

1. Check Your Calendar

Looking at what you're already doing serves as some really excellent LinkedIn content.

I can't honestly stress this tip enough.

Don't believe me?

Well, a couple of weeks ago, I posted about attending a local event, tagging the speaker, and asking a very serious LinkedIn question...

What shoes should I wear? lol

So obviously not serious...but a dilemma I think a lot of us can relate to for work-related events, and it got quite a bit of attention with 30 reactions, 76 comments, and 2,138 impressions.

I think the post got the engagement it did for a few reasons...

  1. I addressed in-the-moment things happening. (A view into my calendar.)
  2. I tagged the speaker & event. (Both of which engaged back with me either with a like, a comment, or both.)
  3. I threw in a relatable experience...deciding what shoes to wear.

Hands down if your stumped on what to talk about on LinkedIn...just talk about the things you are already doing day-to-day...the things you're thinking about.

And make it relatable to your audience.

2. Comments on Your Posts

This is another area that can spark ideas for future posts.

I was already looking at several comments I want to elaborate on in future posts from an article I posted on LinkedIn about imposter syndrome.

Like this comment and the mention of the comparison trap...

It can be a real blocker to posting on LinkedIn. When you start comparing yourself to others...you start second-guessing.

And then, when you let that little voice take over... you often opt not to share at all... losing out on possible connections and opportunities.

I think it's a very worthy topic to address.

Or I couldn't help but think more on this concept of overly polished content because of AI...

Is AI actually making your content better? Or just making it more unrelatable?

Because in the world of marketing and personal branding... unrelatable doesn't lead to growth or more business.

So check out the comments on your posts!

What are people saying that could potentially be a whole new post in the future?

3. Questions from Clients

The very topic of this newsletter comes from the repeated question I hear from clients over and over..."What do I post on LinkedIn to get engagement?"

Regardless of whether you're a fractional, founder, or any experienced leader in your industry...I bet you're seeing repeatable patterns in the questions people ask you every week.

So use it to inform the kind of social post content you should be addressing.

Sure, you're going to have your own topics and ideas you want heard.

But if you want something that will truly resonate… look at what people are already asking you about.

They're giving you clues already.

4. Content from Other Peers

You’ll also find ideas coming from friends and people you follow on LinkedIn, giving you a starting point for your own take on the topic.

Like this post I did that gave credit to Jasmin Alic, one of the well-known experts on LinkedIn...

He had written a post that week and said, “Make it about them, and they’ll make it about you.”

It immediately took me back to my early corporate years, and also made me reflect on who I am today as a solopreneur.

Because time and time again, I’ve seen that focusing on others and being genuinely invested in relationships takes you further in whatever direction you want to go.

I'm sure you've got leaders in your industry that you look up to and follow on LinkedIn, too.

Use some of their work as inspiration, and give them credit.

In this case, Jasmin reached out to me in the DMs, someone with 350,000+ followers, and we had a nice conversation.

You never know. So tag that person who inspired your post.

5. Repurposing Already Successful Posts

And finally, when you have a lot of content under your belt, repurpose what works.

Now, transparently, I totally admit I'm not great at this, especially when it comes to my own content.

Occasionally, I repurpose ideas I've seen work...like sharing what I would call my "origin story" from corporate life to solopreneur. Or the before-and-after transformation of my clients from working with me on their LinkedIn Transformation Package.

But I just love to create new stuff.

However, this year, I'm experimenting with more long-form content on the platform and aiming to repurpose it into bite-sized social posts.

You may have noticed more articles popping up on LinkedIn from me.

The more I read on 360Brew (LinkedIn's algorithm for how content is served up to you in the feed), the more it's about creating more "savable" content. The kind that's packed with valuable info people want to refer back to later. And articles on LinkedIn can be great for that!

So be intentional.

Review your LinkedIn analytics to identify posts with high impressions and engagement. Pay attention to the conversations that pop up in your DMs referencing a post. Those are indicators of the content you want to improve and repurpose on the platform later.
