This must-do exercise you can't skip to grow your business. (Have you done this yet?)

Hi, Reader

Can you believe we're officially in Q4?

Thinking about what's left to accomplish this year in my business, I looked back at every client I worked with and traced where they came from.

Because in year 4 of my business (woohoo!)...I know it's all about making intentional time to see where efforts are paying off…and where they aren't.

So here are some important things I discovered, and by sharing my personal reflection, maybe this can help jump-start yours, too.

I highly recommend it!

5 Distinct Places Fueling My Business

1. A connection I made back in 2023 is still opening doors for me today.

What a blessing.

A designer and female entrepreneur noticed I was a BGSU alum on LinkedIn, and at the time…she needed a SEO writer. And SEO was a service I was actively promoting.

So we started chatting, and she brought me into her world.

That first conversation for a WordPress website project has led to a couple of other website projects, and today I’m doing more LinkedIn & Instagram content for a Fortune 100 client.

Just goes to show that when you intentionally build relationships and provide high-quality work, you never know how long that engagement can last.

To say I'm grateful for this partnership is an understatement.

2. A seat at a conference.

Earlier this year, I spoke at the Women's Leadership Conference in Columbus.

What a truly great experience.

And the CEO I was sitting next to was completely awesome. She and I hit it off right away. And she ended up introducing me to a nonprofit she's involved with that wanted to build its LinkedIn presence to strengthen relationships with oncology professionals.

And that work is happening now:) In fact, the CEO of that nonprofit sent this to me last week…

As much as I genuinely love LinkedIn, showing up in person still matters. A lot. And my speaking events have also led me to some great people and engagements.

This was just one example of a few, from showing up live, in person.

3. Referrals from people already in my network.

Because I post consistently, people in my network know what I do, and I’ve built a strong connection with a fractional CMO.

He brings me in on client projects where he needs someone to own the account, strategy, and content execution.

And… he also has me serve as his own personal brand marketer, building awareness for his services and connecting him with the business leaders who need his help.

It's been a partnership and friendship I appreciate very much.

And my year wouldn't have been the same without knowing him!

4. Comments that became a relationship.

I kept showing up in the comments of another fractional CMO's posts on LinkedIn. And that led to a virtual coffee chat.

Then a year or so later, she reached out to ask if I'd be interested in working on a client project for wealth advisors with her.

Years. Not weeks. That was the first engagement we partnered on.

And now I’m handling that same client’s LinkedIn content still.

5. My newsletters. (Both on Kit & LinkedIn)

My newsletter here, on Kit, sent out every other Thursday, got the attention of a CEO who read for a while, then booked a paid clarity call.

That then turned into a full LinkedIn transformation package in 2025…

A profile glow-up, clarity on exactly what to share based on her goals, and engagement coaching. The keys to the kingdom.

Then her co-founder got the same treatment here this year.

And in my LinkedIn newsletter, which is really just my Kit newsletter repurposed on LinkedIn…another female CEO recently reached out. Now I’m handling the content for her, her co-founder, and the business page.

The pattern?

Not one of these came from a cold pitch. And most of it came from my consistent presence on LinkedIn.

Every single one followed the same path:

visibility → relationship → trust → the ask.

And the ask almost always came from them when they were ready.

The other thing?

Timelines were long.

It took months to years for some of these individuals to become clients after the first time they saw me on LinkedIn or met in person.

Consistency hands-down just isn't a nice-to-have to grow a business.

It's an essential element of the strategy.

The facts are clear. I wouldn't be where I am today without these people and taking these actions above. So you bet, I'm leaning more into these things for the remainder of the year.

So what should you actually post to gain business momentum?

Your content should cover three general pillars:

  1. Your story. Your why. Show us you're human, with very human things going on in your life. People hire people.
  2. Your expertise. Teach us something. This is where you prove that you know your stuff.
  3. The work. Move beyond theory. Share client examples and wins so we can picture what you do, and whether you're the right person for the problem we have right now.

Most people lean hard into sharing without a strategy behind it, but the ones who get hired rotate through these 3 pillars above to some degree.

Then mix up how you deliver your content…

  • Text-only posts
  • Video
  • Posts with a photo
  • LinkedIn newsletters (my new favorite)
  • Polls
  • "Celebrate an occasion" posts

And end with a real call-to-action.

No, it doesn't need to be a link to your services page or "DM SILLYWORD to learn more."

It can be as simple as a question that gets people talking. Or a link to a genuinely useful resource, your lead magnet, that delivers value and allows you to capture their info to follow up later.

What you can do this week to prepare in Q4

  • Audit your last 10 posts. Which pillar is missing? Start by writing the next post for that pillar.
  • Tell your network what you do. If people can't describe your work in a sentence, they can't refer you. That alone deserves a clear post with an actual client story behind it.
  • Say yes to the room. A panel, a conference, a local event. Sit next to someone new and be unafraid to start the conversation. Break the ice. I promise YOU, it won't break:)
  • Start (or restart) your newsletter. It's a lead source you'll never regret.

Now tell me…

Have you done an audit like this for yourself yet?

Where did your best client come from? Hit reply. I'm here to celebrate with you!
