✍️ How to Get Leads: My Current Client Roster

β˜• Fill Your Cup: Podcasts with Friends

Hey hello, Reader,

Thanks for being here. If you're new, welcome:)

I haven't always been a freelancer.

In fact, I spent 15 years in the corporate 9-5 as a digital marketer. It wasn't until 2021 that I got brave enough to hand in my two weeks' notice and take a chance on myself.

So far, it's generating enough income to stay the course.

And I'm all about sharing the ups and downs as a freelancer and my content insights.

With that said, grab your favorite beverage and spend a few minutes with me as we dive into getting more leads:)

✍️ How to Get More Leads

This week, talking to some of you in the DM's on LinkedIn, the theme is pretty consistent...

πŸ‘‰ You need more leads.

And I have to say...I'm right there with ya.

I could take on 1-2 clients if they were the right ones.

Thinking about this goal of getting more leads, I've started to take an honest look at my client roster.

Hopefully, some of these insights will also help you clarify what action to take next.

Let's do this...

Embrace Posting on LinkedIn

Before diving into who and how I found my current clients.

They all have a common tie...my LinkedIn posts.

Each one of them (or someone on their team) mentioned seeing my LinkedIn content.

I post 5-6 times/week.

I discuss how to create LinkedIn content and what's happening in my business.

So even though they may have never engaged with my content, they saw it.

Which tells me there are far more people paying attention than you realize.

And what does that mean for you - it's in your best interest to show up on LinkedIn. (Whatever that amount and consistency look like.)

So even if you're discouraged right now, stick with it πŸ‘

Tap Into Your Existing Network

Half of my clients today know me directly or indirectly from my previous career.

Although I never paid much attention to LinkedIn in those 9-5 days, it sure came in handy when I started posting content to build my business.

For example, a past coworker saw my posts and recommended me for website work.

Today, I'm still working with that client two years later, building their social media presence.

I can't stress enough...

Don't overlook the people you already know.

Reach out to them, start conversations, and offer how you can help.

There's a lot to the saying, "It's who you know."

Stay in Touch With Past Clients You Enjoyed

I'm lucky. I've had great experiences with clients.

Everyone has been pretty kind, paid on time, and genuinely been fun to work with.

So, it hasn't been tough to stay in touch.

I still comment on past clients' posts and check in via email. As a result, some even show up in my feed and support me.

And a cool thing has happened.

I've gained great connections, and they've also asked me to provide other content services for them.

I'm currently creating a LinkedIn content strategy and optimizing a profile of a CEO and Founder whose website I wrote copy for last year.

πŸ‘‰ Remember this...don't always view projects as one-and-done.

Stay connected if you like the individual or business and working with them.

You never know what their needs will be in the future.

Be Intentional to Engage and Comment

Comments give you visibility.

I just signed a client last week, and I know it's because of my comments on LinkedIn.

The contract is for writing content for a chairwoman of a local B2B.

It started with my comments on their business page. I knew I wanted to work with them.

While commenting, I also paid close attention to who was doing a lot of the "liking" on their posts and reposting.

That's when I discovered their business development manager.

I saw her profile and sent a message to connect, but it wasn't until a couple of weeks later that the chairwoman reached out.

She wanted help with her social media presence, and my connection to the business development manager kept me top-of-mind.

I couldn't be more excited right now to be working with herπŸŽ‰

The Takeaway

If you're posting on LinkedIn and disappointed at not attracting enough leads....remember....

βœ… Stick with it. More people are watching than you realize.

βœ… Look at who you know today. Reach out and genuinely connect.

βœ… Revisit past clients you enjoyed. Offer how else you can help.

βœ… Engage & intentionally connect with those you want to work with.

The best part of LinkedIn is connecting and having conversations.

It motivates me to show up every day and engage on the platform.

And less than a year ago, I came across Andy Milligan.

Andy is a talented designer and freelancer.

He came to see one of my talks on building your business and brand on LinkedIn, and since then, we've stayed connected.

He also happens to have an up-and-coming podcast called Marketing by Design.

And when he asked if I would come on as a guest, it was a no-brainer.
